چکیده

We compare the consensus and uniform consensus problems in synchronous systems. In contrast to consensus, uniform consensus is not solvable with byzantine failures. This still holds for the omission failure model if a majority of processes may be faulty. For the crash failure model, both consensus and uniform consensus are solvable, no matter how many processes are faulty. In this failure model, we examine the number of rounds required to reach a decision in the consensus and uniform consensus algorithms. We show that if uniform agreement is required, one additional round is needed to decide, and so uniform consensus is also harder than consensus for crash failures. This is based on a new lower bound result for the synchronous model that we state for the uniform consensus problem. Finally, an algorithm is presented that achieves this lower bound.  2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Uniform Consensus is Harder than Consensus ( extended abstract )

We compare the consensus problem with the uniform consensus problem in synchronous systems. In contrast to consensus, uniform consensus is not solvable in synchronous systems with byzantine failures. This still holds for the omission failure model if a majority of processes may be faulty. For the crash failure model, both consensus and uniform consensus are solvable, no matter how many processe...

Revisiting the Relationship between Non-blocking Atomic Commitment and Consensus ?

This paper discusses the relationship between the Non-Blocking Atomic Commitment problem (NB-AC) and the Consensus problem in asynchronous systems with unreliable failure detectors. We rst connrm that NB-AC is harder than Consensus. In contrast to Consensus , NB-AC is impossible to solve with unreliable failure detectors even with a single crash failure. We deene a weaker problem than NB-AC, ca...

A Realistic Look At Failure Detectors

This paper shows that, in an environment where we do not bound the number of faulty processes, the class P of Perfect failure detectors is the weakest (among realistic failure detectors) to solve fundamental agreement problems like uniform consensus, atomic broadcast, and terminating reliable broadcast (also called Byzantine Generals). Roughly speaking, in this environment, we collapse the Chan...

Adaptive timeliness of consensus in presence of crash and timing faults

The ∆-timed uniform consensus is a stronger variant of the traditional consensus and it satisfies the following additional property: Every correct process terminates its execution within a constant time ∆ (∆-timeliness), and no two processes decide differently (Uniformity). In this paper, we consider the ∆-timed uniform consensus problem in presence of fc crash processes and ft timing-faulty pr...
